The Ohio Third Frontier Project Part of The Ohio 3rd Frontier Project
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, together with its institutional partners, Case Western Reserve University and the University of Cincinnati, and its commercial partners has received a grant from the state of Ohio to establish the Atrial Fibrillation Innovation Center (AFIC), a Wright Center of Innovation. Launched in the summer of 2005, AFIC falls under Ohio's Third Frontier human genetics and biomedical engineering initiative, and is spearheading the charge to address the great suffering imposed by atrial fibrillation (AF), while catalyzing an emerging Ohio AF medical device industry. AFIC represents the largest single government grant in the world to support Atrial Fibrillation research.

The AFIC's uniquely qualified team — the nation's largest and most innovative clinical programs, fundamental researchers and an unrivaled commercialization group — are jointly implementing an exceptionally collaborative five-prong research program to ensure that new AF therapies quickly come to market for the benefit of AF sufferers. State of the art cardiac mapping and experimental labs will be utilized by the group to:

  1. Develop new surgical treatment technologies.
  2. Improve catheter-enabled treatment techniques and instrumentation.
  3. Conduct basic science and translational studies into biochemical cellular and genetic causes for, and treatments of, AF.
  4. Develop next generation AF treatment strategies.
  5. Specify novel patient assessments to better document therapy outcomes and AF mechanisms.
